Responsinet is a small add-in for your browser that, once it has been installed, notifies you in a very clear and easy to follow way, through a coloured bar, if you are spending more than a pre-set time each day, week or month on nominated social networking sites. As the usage increases the bar at the bottom of the browser gradually gets “warmer”.
If your employer is using Reponsinet, it is because it wants you to be responsible and to be aware of your web usageand not block your access. How does it work?
- You will receive an email asking you to install Responsinet. The mail will give you details of how to install the web browser add in.
- Once you have installed Responsinet you will be able to see when you pass certain thresholds of using designated internet sites – per day, week and month. If you exceed these it does not mean you have done anything wrong – you may well have good reasons to be on the web, or be there in your own time. But the system will help you to understand how much time you spend on areas of the internet which if used too much can impact on people's work and an organisation's efficiency.
- Responsinet does not let your employer see your web usage (it does not stop them if they use other means). Your employer will be able to see overall trends of use in the organisation - but not to identify these against individuals - unless they have only added one user on to the system.
- Responsible use of the internet (helped by Responsinet) makes it more likely that your employer can continue to allow internet usage in work (and the organisation you work for won’t be adversely affected by excessive usage).
- If you do not load the browser add-in or activate and use it then this will be apparent to whoever is administering the system in your organisation.
